Trutanich takes on Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

  • Carmen Trutanich is the Los Angeles City Attorney, he has tried to jail people who sell medical marijuana. He's gone after street artists and political demonstrators. At a time when most policymakers are trying to reduce the jail population, Trutanich's impulse is to lock 'em up.
  •  Trutanich is after even more power, he's running for District Attorney, and if he becomes district attorney, he'll be the top prosecutor in Los Angeles — able to launch his own investigations, influence policy and punish people with long prison sentences.
  • Neither the Los Angeles city attorney nor the City Council has the right to ban activity that is protected under state law.
  • If you want to see for yourself how Trutanich is taking away people's medicine, please take two minutes of your time and watch the video below.

Medical Cannabis vs. Prescription Drugs

  • Patients with illnesses such as cancer have many different options when it comes down to medicine, but medicines like morphine or vicodin can be addicting and harmful to the body.
  • For example, some side effects of vicodin can be:
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Mental/Mood changes
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness
  • Becoming lightheaded
  • Everyone reacts to medical marijuana differently, but the common side effects of medical marijuana are:

  • Drowsiness
  • Hunger
  • Dry mouth
  • Short-term memory loss
  • Red eyes

    • Would you rather take prescription drugs that can cause you harm even if you use them as directed by your doctor or medicinal cannabis?

    Dispensaries raided by police

    Police officers searching a dispensary.
    • Law enforcement have been raiding medical dispensaries.
    • One way law enforcement is getting rid of dispensaries is by putting restrictions on them. Restrictions such as:
    • By not having them  near schools and parks.
    • Places of worship
    • Residential areas
    • These restrictions are good and bad. Good because they aren't near places where children are. But they're bad because law enforcement is limiting the number of dispensaries where patients can get their medicine.

      • Under the city's interpretation of the ordinance, which  allowed dispensaries that registered with Los Angeles by Nov. 13, 2007, to apply to stay open, but it required them to have "the same ownership and management."
      • If a dispensary's manager died, quit or was fired and was then replaced, it must close.
      • If the business grew and added managers, it must close.
      • If it shrank and let managers go, it must close.
      • If it was sold to new owners, it must close.
      • If you want to read about how law enforcement is trying to shut down dispensaries, take a look at this article below:

        Innocent patients are being arrested

        • In this video, medical marijuana patients are interviewed and they talk about how they've been targeted by the police. Some patients have even gotten their homes raided just for growing cannabis.

        • Police officers have been harassing and arresting medical marijuana patients who are just trying to get their medicine.
        • They have enough problems to deal with, like their illness, now they have to deal with the police too.
        • The police should be focusing on other problems instead of arresting innocent patients.
        • They should be focusing on other things like:
        • Gangs
        • Rapists
        • Murderers
        • Thieves
        •  Drug dealers
        • Those are only to name a few,but law enforcement should know that these people are patients NOT criminals.
